Reginald Ely Zelnik (May 8, 1936- May 17, 2004) was born in New York City and graduated from Princeton University in 1956. After a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy, he received his M.A. (1961) and Ph.D. (1966) from Stanford University. He taught briefly at Indiana University before joining the History Department faculty at the University of California, Berkeley in 1964. He taught courses in imperial and modern Russian history and was active in the Free Speech Movement. He died in Berkeley, California.
